Undavalli Caves

The Undavalli Caves are unique because they were carved out of sandstone. It is believed to have carved in 4th or 5 century AD. The caves have four stories and they are further divided into compartments. There is a huge statue made out of a single stone of granite in a reclining position in one of the compartments. Even archeologists are not sure whom the statue resembles. Many local people think that the statue is of Lord Vishnu. Some believe that it could be Buddha in reclining position. Much of these caves resemble Jain caves similar to Udaygiri and Khandgiri. There are indicators that these caves might have been carved by the Jains. The compartments resemble monastery cells. There are some relics which resemble the Thirthankara and vessels used by them.

Undavalli caves have been inhabited by several people from ages. Some of these caves have idols of Brahma, Vishnu and Lord Shiva as well. That is why there is a major confusion about the big reclining statue. These caves were dedicated to Anantapadmanabha Swamy and Narsimha Swamy by Vishnukundina Kings.
