Handicrafts have always been an integral part of Indian art and crafts. Telangana is yet another great place for such crafts. The region offers many astounding handicrafts. The extremely talented artisans make these amazing handicrafts with dexterity.

Be it an intricate needle craft or the surprising bronze castings, metal craft or the classic stone craft, Telangana has a wide assortment of handicrafts that can easily become a part of your lifestyle and living rooms. The eminence of these detailed arts lies in the artisan’s traditional methods of creation. These beautiful works of art are loved and adored not only by people within the country, but they also charm people from all parts of the world.

Bidri Craft
Bidri craft is yet another craft that serves as the pride of the Telangana region. This unique art of silver engraved on metal has always enthralled people with its lure. History reveals that this amazing craft was brought by Iran migrants to the country. It involves various stages such as casting, engraving, inlaying and oxidizing.

The name of this art form is derived from a town called Bidar (currently part of Karnataka) of the erstwhile Hyderabad state, located close to Hyderabad. Bidri art involves using black colors for surface ornamentation. It does not fade easily. It also accompanies gold and silver coatings. Bidri art involves using an alloy of Copper and Zinc, called Gunmetal. The art is also used for making Cigar, Huqqa buttons, flower vases, jewellery boxes and many more. Popular Bidri art gift articles that are very famous include cuff links, paper knives, key chains, and paperweights. Originating from Hyderabad in the state of Telangana, this craft commands popularity all over the world.

Banjara Needle Crafts
Banjaras or the Gypsies are important tribes of Telangana. Banjara Needle Crafts are some of the traditional handmade fabrics made by Banjaras in Telangana.

They contribute to the rich arts and crafts of the state in the form of embroidery and mirror work on fabrics. These colourful works can be easily found in most of the wardrobes in India. These tribes make use of their skill in needlecraft to create incredible designs on clothes. One such form is the needlecraft, where simple needles, base fabrics, embroidery threads, and the craft-prowess of these nomads work together to create beautiful pieces of art. Pinks, oranges, blues, whites, yellows and other coloured fabrics, with contrasting multi coloured thread-work, in fine geometric patterns, and other motifs, apart from embellishments like cowries, tiny mirrors, beads and shells, result in the final ornate assemblage and exquisite beauty of Banjara needle craft. One of the main reasons these craft pieces are used widely for decorating homes is because of the exotic feel they bring to the decor, and the unique earthiness, which they effectuate.

Dokra Metal Crafts
Dokra Metal craft is quite popular in the tribal regions of Telangana. Dhokra or Dokra also known as bell metal craft is a tribal metal craft widely seen in Jainoor Mandal, Adilabad District of Telangana. In Adilabad district, places like Ushegaon and Chittalbori are the main contributors of this art.

What catches your eye in this beautiful craft is that each piece is different from the other. The craft produces objects like figurines, tribal gods, etc. This work has good demand both in the domestic and international market due to its aesthetic look and primitive simplicity. The work consists of folk motifs, peacocks, elephants, horses, measuring bowl, lamp caskets and other simple art forms and traditional designs. The Dokra artifacts are made in brass and are unique in that the pieces do not have any joints. The method is by combining metallurgical skills with wax techniques employing the lost wax technique, a unique form where mould is used only once and broken, making this art the only one-of-its-kind in the world. There are many families in Adilabad district dedicated to this ancestral craft, which is a labor-intensive work.

Nirmal Arts
Nirmal town of Adilabad district is known for its varied range of handicrafts. The amazing skill of the craftsmen make the works appear authentic with their dazzling use of colors accompanied with traditional techniques of creating masterpieces. Adding to the authenticity of the Nirmal works is the use of natural dyes.
Nirmal is world famous for oil paintings depicting themes from the epics such as Ramayana and Mahabharata. Exhibited in the form of wood paintings and other wooden articles, Nirmal artwork accompanies aesthetic expressions. The talent of the Nirmal artists in synthesizing Indian and Moghul schools of art is definitely worthy of admiration. The origin of the Nirmal craft is traced back to the Kakatiya era. The motifs used for Nirmal craft are floral designs and frescoes from the regions of Ajanta and Ellora and Mughal miniatures. In addition to wall hangings, Nirmal craftsmen create beautiful lacquered furniture, pictures, trays, toys, bowls, boxes and large screens.

A range of utilitarian and decorative articles are also made using Nirmal style. Nirmal toys consists of an herbal extract, which imparts them a golden sheen. Nirmal toys are embellished with rich and exclusive oil colours.

Bronze Castings
Telangana is famous world-wide for its amazing Bronze castings. These castings require special skills for creating incredible idols. The craftsmen study the details of the famous Shilpashastram. The aesthetics of the idols are made perfectly by means of their physical measurements, descriptions of the deity, proportions, characteristics and artistic symbolism. While using solid casting of icons, the mould is created suing several coatings of different clays on a finished wax model. This process then imparts fine curves to the cast image.

Lacquer Ware
In Telangana, the town of Etikoppaka is quite famous for its remarkable lacquer ware. This amazing craft requires the application of lacquer on wood. Lacquering can be done either by hand or by with the help of a machine. The hand-lathe is usually preferred for shaping delicate items. The lac is then applied when the objects turn arid. In this process, the lacstick is completely hard-pressed against the woodenware, which has to be lacquered. Since the object keeps revolving, this friction generates heat, that inturn softens the lac and facilitates the color in getting fixed. With the help of a brush, the designs are painted on the figurines, objects and toys. Lac bangles are most popular lacquer ware, as they are embellished with stones, beads, glass and mirrors.
