Kapila Theertham

Kapila Theertham is a temple in Tirumala. Tirumala and Tirupathi cities mainly consist of temples that are dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu. However Kapila Theertham is only temple in these cities where Lord Shiva is the main deity. In the 50 miles radius of Tirupathi devasthanam this temple has been lesser known. Tirumala is a thickly forested area. Kapila Theertham temple is located on the steepest hills of the ranges at a mouth of a cave. Close to this cave temple the famous waterfall Papanasanam comes pouring down. Right at the entrance of the temple there is a statue of a huge bull which considered Shiva’s steed.

History and legend

It is said that a great sage called Kapila Maharishi lived in this cave and performed penance for years for Lord Shiva to appear. He even installed a statue of the lord and meditated everyday. That is why the temple has been named after the sage and Theertham means a holy pond or waterfall. Throughout the temple you will find inscriptions by the Chola kings in Devanagiri script. It is one of the most ancient scripts known to mankind. These scripts were written in the 10th century. It speaks about the greatness of the lord and stories about him.
