Heritage in Mahabubnagar
The district of Mahabubnagar is the largest district in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh.
It is claimed that the Golconda diamonds and the famous Kohinoor diamond adorning the crown of Queen Elizabeth were mined in Mahabubnagar.
The district is renowned for its rich culture and heritage, which goes back all the way to 220 BC. It is home to several ancient temples.
While Buddhism was predominant during the Chola Dynasty, there are no Buddhist temples in the district.
Mahabubnagar was initially called Palamooru or Rukmammapeta, but its name was changed to honour Mir Mahbub Ali Khan Asaf Jah VI, who was the Nizam of Hyderabad.
The town of Mahabubnagar is about 96 kilometres from Hyderabad. The district also is famous for its Megalithic burial sites.
It has more than 200 such sites spread across the district in areas, such as Amrabad, Nadimpalem, Kalakonda, Panjugal, Pedda Maroor, Venkatraopet and Mudumal.
