Kanchi kamakshi temple in kanchipuram
The Kanchi kamakshi temple was built around 6 C.E.by pallava kings whose capital city was kanchipuram. The main kamakshi idol was golden Thought centuries. At the time of British ruling India they used temples in kanchipuram as their armouries due to this reason some temples were damaged too. Considering this situation head of Kanchi kamakoti peetham Sri chandrasekhara paramacharya took golden kamakshi idol to Tanjore and worshiped there.We can still visit Golden kamakshi at Tanjore.
At Kamakshi temple at kanchipuram goddess kamakshi sit in padmasana posture.We can see golden piller inside the temple which got very importance in Temple history. At the left side of the kamakshi idol there is Lakshmi idol. The idol is called as aroopa Lakshmi this means ugly idol of goddess Lakshi. The devotees at kamakshi temple should take the Kumkum directly. They should first pour the Kumkum on the head of Aroopa Lakshmi idol and collect the kumukum (sindhoor) from the feet of the idol.
The story behind this is – One day goddess Lakshmi makes fun of Lord sri maha vishnu's color which is black. Then, Lord Vishnu cruses Lakshmi to become Aroopi (ugly) later, he advise to go to the kanchi kamakshmi temple to get rid of the curse. Hence after getting Kumkum also known as sindhoor from kamakshi temple Godess Lakshmi became roopa Lakshmi (beautiful as before). We can see roopa Lakshmi idol in the temple.
At right side of the temple we can see Lord maha Vishnu idol. According to Hindu purans it is believed that lord Vishnu stay in the kamakshi temple to get his wife roopa Lakshmi.

Kamakshi Temple at Kanchipuram has great importance. It is one of the Astadasa 18 Shakti peethas. During the time of Daksha yagyam sathi get insulted by her father Daksha, He also insults Lord shiva at the moment Sathi sacrifices her life by self-burning. Shiva in a great depression tooks sathi’s burning body and roaming universe with a great sorrow. At the time different body parts of sathi felldown on different parts of Earth. Those 18 places are called as Ashtadasa shakthi pethas.Kanchipuran or kanjivaram (in Tamil) is NABHI stanam. That’s whay the kamakshi temple acquired high importance in shakthi pethas.
KAMAKSHI TEMPLE HISTORY :
Adi shakaracharya in 1st millennium CE visited Kamakshi Amman temple and explaind the power and greatness of kamashi to the locals.Adi shakaracharya and Kamakshi are two individually same things hard to separate. When he visited the kanchipuram the days are not golden days of Hinduism. He is the one who provoked ancient Hinduism in Indians heart and explained reasoning behind the Hindu rituals. Adishakaracharya installed Sri chakra in the inner temple. The crucial reason behind installing Sri chakra is the power of goddess kamakshi is too high so that normal people can’t bare it. To reduce the power in the idol he distributed the total power into three parts one at idol and second at ear rings of kamakshi and third to the sri chakra. Devotees still can visit srichakra at the inner temple.
The srichakram in the temple has the same power as Kamakshi amman. 68th kanchi kamakoti peethadhipathi (head of kamakotipeeth) applied golden plate around sri chakra.The head of kamakoti peetham are still worship Kanchi kamakshi amman (mother) regularly.

FESTIVALS AT KANCHI KAMAKSHI TEMPLE:
Brahmotsavam – This is the important festival at Kanjipuram kakashi temple. This is the one of must attend festival. Because goddess Kamakshi mount different vahanas (vehicles) like lion, deer, elephant etc., at different days of the festival for procession. The procession will takes place in the evenings of all days of the festival.
Navaratri – Navaratri festival has significant importance in the history of Kanchi Kamakshi temple. This is a festival of 9 days, the whole nine days Kamakshi amman decorates as 9 different goddesses namely Durga, saraswathi, lalitha so on. In the evening golden car procession will occur.

The Kamakshi Amman temple located in Kanchipuram, Tamilnadu is one of the ancient Sakthi peethas. The presiding deity Kamakshi Amman gives darshan to devotees with a lasso and a goad in the upper two hands hand and a bunch of flowers in the lower two arms along with a parrot perched on the flower bunch and a sugarcane bow.
