Pulicat Lake

Pulicat is a small seashore township that offers a revitalizing and exciting experience of expedition. This enthralling place situated on the barricade island of Sriharikota that serves as a divider of the Pulicat Lake from Bay of Bengal. This well known place is located at a distance of about 60 kilometers from Chennai and is at a distance of about 3 kilometers from Elavur. The town is esteemed as the second leading salt lagoon in India. It covers a total area of around 720 sq km of which 84 per cent comes in AP and 16 per cent in Tamil Nadu. The Pulicat lake is sprawled over an area of 60 kilometers.

The major attractions that draw audience to Pulicat are its beach, the Dutch cemetery and the most popular bird sanctuary. Every year between the months of October to March, thousands of species of migratory birds fly down to this place and forms a major attraction for tourists. Amongst these migrating species, the colorful flamingos throng the place in large numbers adding color to the entire place. These birds cover the swampy area of the lake. Other birds seen here are ducks, cranes, herons, and painted storks. The tourism department organizes a flamingo festival in mid-December or in early January every year. The festival makes this place a haven for bird watching, and is loaded with captivating and magnificent views allure visitors from all over.

Other appealing places include a Dutch Fort constructed in 1609 for the Dutch army on the Coromandel Coast though it was conquered by the British in 1825. There is a Church built by the Dutch but is in ruins at present. On the opposite bank of the Pulicat Lake is a lighthouse of the ancient times.
