Dharmapuri is a Mandal headquarters and temple town located on the banks of the River Godavari in Karimnagar district of Telangana, India. Dharmapuri town has attained religious prominence mainly due to the existence of a shrine dedicated to Lord Narasimha Swamy, considered an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Here one can find the images of Siva along with Dakshinamurthy, Vinayaka and Saptha Mathrukas that is carved out of a single stone. The place is also known for the sixty-pillar Mahalakshmi temple and 500-year year old Sri Sita Rama Swami temple.
The Ramalingeswara Temple is believed to be a 1000-year old temple, which is located close to Narsimha Swamy Temple. It is believed that Lord Rama installed Siva Lingam in this temple during his exile when he was on his way to Lanka. Dharmapuri Narasimha Swamy temple consists of different statues of the lord Narasimha. The older one is called Pata Narasimha Swamy meaning older in Telugu and the new temple is called Kottha Narasimha Swamy implying this is the newer one. It is one of the nine Narsimha Kshetras of Telangana region.
Dharmapuri is considered one of the largest settlements of Vedic Brahmins in Telangana region. To this day one can find traditional families practicing vedic hymns and some of them also possess Talapatra scriptures. This town also has a rare temple dedicated to Lord Dattatreya, the son of Lord Brahma. The specialiity of this place is that Godavari River which flows from west to east flows in north to south direction; hence the river is also called as dakshina vahini. There are many ghats at Dharmapuri such as Brahma Gundam, Yama Gundam, Satyavathi Gundam, Pala Gundam, etc., for pilgrims to take holy bath. Dharmapuri is known for producing some of the best Sanskrit Scholars and poets and boasts of age old copper relics depicting the Sthala Purana.
Each year during March/April thousands of devotees come here to celebrate Laxmi Narasimha Swamy Jatara and also Mokshada Ekadashi celebrated at the onset of Dakshinayana. Tourists can reach Dharmapuri located at a distance of 30 km from Jagityal town while Mancherial railway station is situated from here at a distance of 42 km.
