Bojjana Konda

Sankaram is a tiny little hamlet located on the banks of Sarada River close to Vizag. Sankaram town is exactly 45 km from Vizag or Vishakhapatnam. The closest village to this town is Anakapalli. Sankaram is most famous for its Buddhist settlements. Andhra Pradesh has had several Buddhist settlements across the plateau. The cultural diversity of the state from ancient times allowed Buddhism to flourish here. traveling Buddhists fund a new home in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

About Sankaram

There are two main sites in Sankaram, the Bojjana Konda and Lingalakonda. These sites were built around the 3rd or 4th century. Several monks settled in the caves nearby and spread the religion through their preaching. In fact the name Sankaram comes from the word Sangharama which means a monastery in Buddhist language. This place was first discovered by a British explorer called Alexander Rea. Ever since this place gained a lot of importance in historic sites and to preserve the relics of this ancient culture.

Bojjana Konda

Bojjana Konda in local language means that the hill of a person seated. Bojjana is the colloquial name for Buddha for the tribes who inhibited this place. While their settlements the monks who lived here constructed stupas, and also structures carved out of caves. When the archeological department started excavating this place they found several ancient coins that nearly 2000 years old. This small hillock has a statue of Buddha in a seating position and meditating. Also there are several statues that were carved from the rocks to resemble Buddha. This hillock is located in the most scenic place of the Vizag belt. It is surrounded by greenery and water bodies. There are prayer halls within the caves and wells that supplied water. Several visitors who see this place and visit the meditation hall say that they feel a strong spiritual energy even today.

Lingala Konda

This hillock has hundreds of stupas in continuous rows and is spread all over the hill. The stupas always have been an enigmatic structure. Nobody knows what the exact purpose of these tall structures is. While excavating the caves in this hillock several gold coins were found. They bore initials of the kings from Samukhya age. These Buddhist sites have gained national importance because of their rich diversity and culture. Even today it is an interesting site of study for several archeologists.

Getting there

Sankaram is located at a distance of only 45 kms from Vizag. One can reach Vizag and drive down to the place or even take public transport. There are some trains which reach Anakapalli directly from Hyderabad. From Anakapalli it is only 4 kms away. You will see plenty of guides here who are willing to tell you the story of these hillocks.
