VERSOVA BEACH
Versova beach is situated in the suburbs of Andheri and is a continuation of the Juhu beach. One can board a bus or hire an auto from Andheri Bus station to reach this beach.
The village of Versova is home for the fishing folk known as 'Kolis'. The beach is famous for its fish market, where an auction is held on a daily basis.
As compared to Juhu, this beach is less frequented by tourists because of few tourist attractions. Donkey and horse rides across the shore attracts tourists. It is a blissful experience to watch the fishermen heading out into the sea and catching fresh fish. To take relief from their daily routine work, locals prefer to visit this beach and enjoy moments of peace and watch the magnificent sunsets.
It was under the Portuguese empire till 1739, when they lost it to the Marathas. In 1774, the Marathas were also defeated by the British.
Massive rocks bordering the beach act as a buffer and protect the village and buildings from the enormous waves of the Arabian Sea.
'Kolis' celebrate their important festival 'Coconut Day' by offering coconuts to the God of the sea. 'Ganesh Chaturthi', a magnificent festival, is held in this beach every year, where the locals pray for good health, prosperity and happiness and immerse idols of the elephant God 'Ganesh' into the sea.
The ISKCON Hare Rama Hare Krishna temple, with a magnificent temple complex, is located in Juhu near this beach.
The best time to visit this beach is from September to May when humidity is low and the weather is pleasant.
