The erstwhile Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Hyderabad, St.Mary's Church is the oldest catholic church in the city of Secunderabad.
The construction of the cathedral started with the work of an Irish Catholic, Fr. Daniel Murphy in the year 1840, and the work was completed by 1850. Constructed in a Gothic style with pointed buttresses and curved arches, St.Mary's was the largest church in the state of Hyderabad during the late 19th century.
The church is easily recognised by a large statue of the Virgin Mary right outside its gate.
The roof is wooden, its windows are decorated with stained glass and there are four church bells which are believed to have been brought from Italy.
Due to its wonderful architecture, the church attracts a lot of local as well as foreign traffic.
After the see or the seat of bishop, got transferred to Hyderabad from Secunderabad, the church lost its status as a cathedral. Recently the church has again been upgraded to a Basilica.
It is quite a hike to reach this church, but on reaching it you are awed by the architecture of the church.
Inside the church, the silence and the serenity slowly seeps into your soul until you reach a quiet place within yourself.
Even if you are not religiously inclined, you are sure to find a very soothing and relaxing ambience within the church.
