Gurramkonda

Gurrumkonda is a hill-fort town of extreme historical importance. It is located between the Kaddapa and the Bangalore highway.

The town used to be known as Zafarabad and was home to more than 40 mosques, which are no longer in existence.

It is claimed that a Sufi saint, Hazrat Shah Kamal, came from Persia and settled in Gurramkonda. He taught Islam to the people residing in the area.

It also houses the mausoleum of Tipu Sultan's maternal uncle, Maqbeera and the tomb is called Maqbara Tomb.

The town became a part of the Vijaynagara Kingdom and was under the reign of King Sri Krishna Deva Raya.

Town got its name from the horses that the king used to ride up the steep hill to reach his palace.

Local legend has it that when the town was attacked, the king scattered his precious stones in the hill to prevent the invaders from laying their hands on it.

The locals believe that this treasure is still hidden in the hills.
