The Oil Industry's role
The Oil Industry has been distributing useful and free literature on the conservation of petroleum products. This is published in several languages. Conservation Fortnights are organised every year to give a fillip to conservation awareness and allied activities.
It is also putting up posters, glow signs etc. at appropriate places to remind the motorists to adopt correct driving habits and ensure conservation.
Soft loans and subsidies are given by the Oil Industry (OIDB) for buying fuel/energy efficient boilers, furnaces, buses and foot valves. These loans are also extended for installing laboratories and equipment facilities for repairing vehicles and for ensuring their efficient and pollution-free operation.
The Oil Industry is also promoting the use of alternate sources of energy to the maximum extent possible. Many petrol pumps are provided with SPV system. Some Oil Company colonies have solar water heaters. Oil Companies have also distributed and installed solar water heaters, solar cookers, solar lanterns, gobar gas plants, improved choolhas, efficient kerosene stoves & lanterns in some select villages in the districts of Solan, Sultanpur and Jaisalmer. Wind mills are also being considered. All these will act as stimuli for others to emulate.

A fuel efficient stove
It is also exploring use of methanol/ethanol alongwith MS/ HSD in transport vehicles as a conservation measure. Battery operated vehicles are also being tried out.
Oil Companies are also improving the lubricants quality to make them fuel efficient, long drain and low emission type. The specific consumption of fuels and lubricants in every sector including the transport sector has come down as a combined result of all these measures.
The oil refineries are implementing various schemes like revamping and replacement of inefficient furnaces and boilers and installation of heat exchangers, economisers and generation equipments etc. apart from adoption of improved house keeping pracfices for conservation of hydrocarbons.
A variety of effective and result-oriented conservation methods have also been adopted by the Undertakings in the 011 Sector, which zire engaged in the upstream activities like exploration. production and transportation of crude oil and natural gas.
