BPCL has been marketing lubricants and greases for more than two decades now. However, in 2003 it decided to bring all its lubricants & grease products under a single umbrella brand - MAK. Since then, MAK has brought almost all of its products under the MAK Lubricants brand name.
Base Oil for MAK Lubricants is produced at the state-of-the-art Mumbai Refinery. Currently, this refinery produces Group II SN65, SN150 and SN500 base oils. These base oils are mainly used in manufacturing of low viscosity oils, mainly used in engines. Heavy viscosity base oil, known as bright stock, is used in manufacturing of gear oils. MAK Lubricants purchases bright stock from other oil marketing companies, like IOCL and HPCL. BPCL even purchases base oil from international markets depending upon prevailing rates.
Currently, there are four blending and filling plants, viz. Wadilube in Mumbai, Loni in Delhi, Tonidarpet in Chennai, and Budge Budge in Kolkata. Finished products from these plants are moved through tank lorries to supply locations all over India. Currently, there are approximately 60 supply locations.
MAK Lubricants has marketing offices in all major cities of India. The marketing setup consists of four regions, viz. North, South, West and East. Each region has territory set up under it. Currently, there are 28 territories all over India.
MAK Lubricants is a very young brand as compared to established brands like Castrol and Servo. However, of late it has started making its presence felt in India and has been increasing its market share steadily. MAK Lubricants associates its brand with youth and participates in a lot of youth festivals. It has also been associated with car and bike rallies.
Captain of the Indian Cricket Team Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the brand ambassador of MAK Lubricants till 2007. Now, Gulf Oil, another private player in Indian market, has taken him as their brand ambassador.
