Sangameswaram

The region of Sangameswaram is a famous pilgrim hotspot in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The Sangameswaram is mainly famous among various pilgrims because of its strategic location at the merging point of two important rivers. ‘Sangam’ in the local lingo means a ‘point of merging’, and the place has been aptly named due to its geographical location and scenario. The two main rivers that run through the state of Andhra Pradesh, namely the River Krishna and the River Bhavanasi converge here, and this makes the region of Sangameswaram a must visit for every religiously and spiritually inclined person in the country.

Sangameswaram is famous for a very well known temple that is located in the region – the Sangameswara Temple. The Sangameswara temple has a famous Lingam, and this Lingam differs from every other Lingam in the country in the respect that it is made entirely of wood. This temple is popular among Shaivites of the Hindu clan, and many pilgrims thus flock to the region of Sangameswaram during the time of Maha Shivarathri.

The temple is also different from the rest, given the fact that it gets submerged into the collective water that rushes from these two rivers when the dams are opened. It is located in a foreshore region, and it is prone to floods from the surrounding rivers. Pilgrims flock to the temple every time it resurfaces, s the deity there is considered to be very powerful.
