Medaram is a dense forest in Warangal District of Andhra Pradesh. The famous Sammakka Sarakka festival or Medaram Jathara is an annual festival that is celebrated once in 2 years. It is the biggest event of the Deccan Plateau and the second largest in entire India. More than 90 lakh people visit this event. The Medaram Sammakka Sarakka Jatara dates 2014 it is being conducted from February 12th to 15th. It is called the Mecca of India and Kasi of the South. It is popularly known as Sammakka Sarakka Jatara.
Sammakka Sarakka life history
There are several stories about Sammakka and Sarakka. One day a group of tribal from the forest spotted a small girl playing with tigers. There was a bright light surrounding her. They brought her along with them. When she grew up she was married to the tribal chief and she had two daughters and son. She named her daughters Sammakka, Nagulamma and the son as Jampanna This story took place somewhere in 1000 AD. The family was worshipped and she took care of her tribes men.
Legend has it that during the Sammakka Sarakka Jatara the presence of the goddess is strongly felt in these parts. There is a brief Sammakka Sarakka history that people talk about. This festival was started by a tribal community in these forests. It is a common belief that the goddess of Sammakka Sarakka temple will grant your wishes and fulfill all your desires. It is a popular belief that some people get possessed by the goddess when the festivities are going on. You will witness several people who dance in possession.

Pilgrims who visit the Sammakka Sarakka temple fulfill their vows made to the goddess by offering calves as sacrifice, jaggery, coconuts and also money. They have a holy bath in Jampanna stream to be absolved of their sins. A special day is chosen for the Sammakka Sarakka festival. It is organized on Maghasudha Pournami. These two goddesses are soaked in vermillion and are brought in an earthen pot to a platform on different days. They both are worshipped with much grandeur. The priest brings out an ochre box and takes out the relics from it. There will be heavy beating of drums and people will be chanting and screaming the goddess name. During this festival the pilgrims spread over a radius of 9 Kms and more. It takes complete three days for them to visit the goddess and take blessings.

Since this is a massive event the government makes several arrangements in advance. Hundreds of government vehicles are parked near Medaram to transport people. The entire area is sealed off with tight security in place. Several facilities like water supply and toilets are taken care of well in advance.
