Atla Taddi usually falls in the Indian month of Ashwiyuja on the third night after a full moon day. Under the Gregorian calendar, it occurs in the month of October every year. This festival symbolizes the strength of a woman and the manner in which her good deeds would benefit her husband.

The origin of Atla Taddi

According to mythology, Atla Taddi is believed to be a ritual recommended by Goddess Gauri for all young and unmarried girls that seek blessings for a right bridegroom. In ancient times, legends say that a princess of a vast kingdom tried to oblige the Goddess by fasting for Atla Taddi but could not wait until its completion since she had fainted due to thirst and hunger. Looking at her condition, her brother then tried to save her by showing her a mirror carrying a reflection of fire in it, which resembles a full moon.

Several years later, after the princess grew u, they could not find any young groom for marriage. Finally, her brothers decided to get her married off to an old man. Enraged with despair, the princess fled to forest where she had been weeping under a banyan tree. Looking her condition, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati appeared and explained her that since she could not complete the ritual of Atla Taddi, it had resulted in this situation. Immediately the princess went back and finished the rituals as per the custom and she soon tied the knot a handsome young man of her choice.
