Penchalakonda

The state of Andhra Pradesh is also home for many pilgrim places one of which is the Penchalakonda. This is the place where Lord Narasimha manifested himself as a huge rock. The incarnation was in ‘Yoga Mudra’ by which it derived its name of Penusila, which means huge rock. It is believed that there is a water fall coming from the hill where the Lord Narasimha had come. It is believed that Lord Narasimha came to this hill and bathed under this waterfall after slaying the demon Hiranya Kasipa and shed his anger and fury thus withdrawing his avatar or incarnation.

Lord Narasimha is known by the name of Somasila Narasimha Swamy in this region. It is also believed that there lived a Maharshi a saint by name ‘Kanva’ at these waterfalls and performed his penance here. He is believed to have used the water from the river named Kanvayeru which flows through Rapur and merges in to the Bay of Bengal. The river is called as Kanvayeru as the Maharshi lived on its banks. However, the village and the river are known with different names now. The village was called as Penisula but as time passed, it is now famously known as Penchalakonda and the river which was known as Kanvayeru is now known as Kandleru.

Every year in the months of April and May a big festival is celebrated in the village which is located in the Rapur mandal of Nellore district in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The village where the temple of Sri Penusila Narasimha Swamy is situated is actually located 70 kms away from Nellore city. The annual festival is celebrated on the Jayanthi or birthday of Narasimha Swamy and devotees from near and far distances gather and celebrate the festival with great devotion. The Government of Andhra Pradesh constructed a dam in the region in the year 1982 near the lake, which is known as the Kandaleru dam has given livelihood to many natives and has made the agriculture of the surrounding lands very fruitful.  Since this village is a popular pilgrim place, the people of the state visit this place from different parts of Andhra Pradesh.
