A separate administrative set up popularly known as the Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) has been set up, functioning at Allahabad to be in overall charge of the Railway Electrification projects all over India.
This organization is headed by a General Manager. It has various project units currently operating from different locations viz. Ambala, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gorakhpur, Hajipur, Kota, Lucknow, New Jalpaiguri and Secunderabad. This organisation has been functioning since 1961.
A centralised organisation popularly known as CORE ( Central Organisation for Railway Electrification) was set up in 1979 at Allahabad.
There are about 277 officers and 2060 Group ’C’ and Group ’D’ staff (as on 31.03.12), who are managing the work of Railway Electrification in CORE and its project offices.
Starting with 1500 V direct electric traction on 3rd Feb, 1925 a small section of 16 Kms between Bombay VT and Kurla Harbor, Railway Electrification has travelled a long journey since.
Indian Railways are today having 22224 route kms of its tracks under the electric traction system as on 31.03.2012. Electrified Route constitute 34.48% of the total Railway Network and 40.27% of the BG System respectively.
This covers major trunk routes namely: Howrah - Delhi, Howrah - Bombay, Delhi - Bombay, Delhi - Chennai, Chennai - Bangalore, Howrah-Chennai-Ernakulam-Trivendram and Delhi - Amritsar.
The first trunk route of Electrification from Howrah to Delhi was completed on 05/08/1976. History was again created on 01/02/1988, when electric traction started running on the entire length from Bombay to Delhi i.e. between the Commercial capital and Political capital of India marking the completion of entire route between Bombay - Delhi via Western Railway. This was the second trunk route to be completed after the first trunk route from Howrah to Delhi.
Over all about 65.2% of the freight and about 50.5% of passenger traffic is hauled by electric traction on Indian Railways.
During 11th Five year Plan Railway Electrification energised 4556 Route Kms surpassing the target of 4500 route Kms fixed for the plan.
Target for 12th Five year plan (2012-17) is 6500 RKM. Target for financial year 2013-14 has been kept as 1200 RKM.
