The company was formed on December 12, 2002, as a wholly owned subsidiary company of NTPC with an objective to develop small and medium hydroelectric power projects of up to 250 MW. NHL is implementing Lata-Tapovan H.E. project (171 MW) and Rammam stage III H.E. project (120MW).

NTPC Ltd has formed a wholly owned subsidiary company named “NTPC Hydro Ltd” in December 2002, with an objective to develop small and medium size Hydro Electric Projects upto 250 MW capacities. Presently, the Company is implementing two projects namely, Lata Tapovan Hydro Electric Project (171 MW capacity) in the state of Uttarakhand and Rammam Hydro Electric Project, Stage–III (120 MW capacity) in the states of West Bengal and Sikkim. Currently the authorised share capital of the Company is Rs 500 Crores.
NTPC Hydro Ltd.’s (NHL) maiden venture, LATA-TAPOVAN H.E. Project (171 MW capacity) is a run of river scheme and is located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state. On allotment of this project by the then Govt. of Uttaranchal (GoUA) in August 2003, NHL had taken up the site specific studies & investigations for preparation of DPR and establishing Techno-Economic viability. The Project Implementation Agreement was signed between NHL and GoUA in Nov.2005. The DPR for this project has been formulated and pre-requisite project/site specific clearances including Techno- Economic and Environmental Clearances have been obtained.
Further, land for the project has been acquired and township infrastructure development work is under progress. The project shall be developed as a regional power station with 12% free power to Govt. of Uttarakhand. The power generated from the project would be provided to the beneficiaries of Northern Region states and the project is slated for commissioning during XII Plan period.
NHL’s second venture RAMMAM H.E. Project, Stage-III (120 MW capacity) is a run of river scheme and its major components are located in Darjeeling district of West Bengal state. On entering into an agreement with West Bengal State Electricity Board (WBSEB) in April 2005, NHL had taken up site specific studies & investigations for preparation of the DPR and establishing Techno-Economic viability. Subsequently, Govt. of West Bengal in June 2007, accorded administrative approval for implementation of the project. Various site specific studies and investigations, formulation of DPR have been completed and pre-requisite project/site specific clearances including Techno- Economic and Environmental Clearances have been obtained.
Further, majority of the land for the project has been acquired and various infrastructure developmental works are under progress. The project is for the benefit of West Bengal and Sikkim states and is slated for commissioning during XII Plan period.
