Life Sciences Research Board (LSRB)

The mission of Life Sciences Research Board (LSRB) of Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has been expand and deepen the knowledge-base of Life Sciences in the country to strengthen and use of national resources of knowledge, know-how, experience, facilities and infrastructure. The research board will also help catalyse the needed cross-fertilization of ideas and experiences between workers in those scientific and technical fields that provide the needed support to the soldier in operations, and the needed knowledge for integrating human-factors in the design of his equipment in missions and in peace stations.

'Man and weapon' are the two symbiotic components of the defence system. Whereas the development of weapon systems is crucial, the well-being and effective performance of the 'man behind the weapon' is equally important.

Ensuring the operational effectiveness of the soldier is a task as central to operational effectiveness as the weapons he wields. To ensure that the soldier is, and continues to be, in top form of physical and mental fitness, his physiological, psychological, medical and nutritional needs need to be effectively met. The soldier has also to be protected from environmental hazards to which he is exposed during the discharge of his duties.
The personnel of our Armed Forces, and those who support them, operate in a complex web of inter- relationships between themselves, their machines and their environments. The sciences relevant to these relationships include bio-sciences, bio-technology bio-engineering, weather & environmental studies, ecology and bio-safety, psychology mind-body studies, medical and other sciences. Only with a full knowledge-based understanding of the sciences in this web, can the 'man behind-the- machine' be trained, selected, equipped, protected and conditioned to perform in the emerging theatres of war and peace-enforcement.
