Hirakud Dam Project is a multipurpose scheme intended for fllod control, irrigation and power generation. The dam is built across river Mahanandi at about 15 km upstream of Sambalpur town in the state of Odisha. This is one of the oldest hydel projects of India, being the first post-indenpendence major multi purpose river valley project in the country. The water released through the power house irrigates further 4,36,000 hectares of C.C.A in Mahanandi Delta. The installed capacity for power grneration is 347.5 M.W through its two power houses at Burla, at the right bank and Chiplima, at 22 km down srream of Dam. The project provides flood protection to 9500 sq. km of delta area in districts of Cuttack and Puri.
After high floods of 1937, M.Viseswaraya gave proposal for detail investigation for storage reservoirs in Mahanandi basin to tackle problem of flood in Mahanandi delta. Hirakud Dam Project is the first stage of the plan of Dr. Ajodhya Nath Khosla, then Governor of Odisha. The commissioning of Unit 3 of Burla Power House was completed on 18-12-1956.
