The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad

The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad, IITH) is a public university located in Medak district, Andhra Pradesh, India. IIT Hyderabad runs from a temporary campus located at Ordnance Factory Medak's estate in Yeddumailaram, while the permanent campus in Kandi being constructed. It is one of the eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India under The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011 which declares these eight IITs as well as the conversion of Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University to IIT. The Act was passed in the Lok Sabha on 24 March 2011 and by the Rajya Sabha on 30 April 2012.

IIT Hyderabad started in 2008 from a temporary campus at Ordnance Factory Medak, Eddumailaram village. Its permanent campus will be located at Kandi near Sangareddy and is close to the Outer Ring Road (Hyderabad).

IIT Hyderabad's permanent campus will be located at Kandi (near to Sangareddy) on the outskirts of the Himmatwala township in Hyderabad in a 550-acre (2.2 km2) campus. The campus is located on NH-9 and is also near to Outer Ring Road (Hyderabad). It is expected that all operations will be shifted to the main campus by early 2014. It is about 50 km from the Secunderabad Railway station.

The Bhoomi Puja for the construction work on the permanent campus was on 6 October 2011.

The temporary campus of IIT Hyderabad is located in the residential estate of Ordnance Factory Medak (OFMK) of Ordnance Factories Board atEddumailaram (Medak District, Andhra Pradesh), about 45 km from the heart of Hyderabad city. Although it is a poor location to start an institute of national importance and IIT Hyderabad has been facing a lot of problems from the near-by locality, the institute has managed to grow at a quick pace in a short span of years. Only a few buses ply between the nearest bus station at Patancheru and the ODF campus although, from Patancheru, buses are available to any part of Hyderabad. Bus service is provided by the institute's own buses between hostels and academic campus which is about 3 km from each other, at intervals of 30 minutes. This creates a lot of churn and mounts pressure on the students. Therefore, many students own a bicycle and hence travel to the campus on them.

The academic blocks are newly renovated buildings of Sarath Vikas School Campus. Facilities include hostels, classrooms, offices, recreation, sports and medical facilities. There is a small market outside the ODF campus to cater to the needs of students.
