English and Foreign Languages University


The English and Foreign Languages University (or EFLU), formerly the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages(CIEFL),is a Central University in India. Its main campus is located in Hyderabad. It also operates campuses at Lucknow andShillong.In the month of March 2013 EFLU has launched its fourth campus at Mallapuram in Kerala state. The Government of Keralahanded its over more than 75 acres of land for exclusive use of University academic activities.

Established by the government of India in 1958 as the Central Institute of English, the scope of its activities was expanded in 1972 to include the teaching of foreign languages such as French, German and Russian. Consequently the name changed to Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages before it was accorded Central University status in 2006 and was renamed as the English and Foreign Languages University.

EFLU provides for the study of English and foreign languages and their literatures, organisation of research, training of teachers, production of teaching materials, and extension services, to help improve the standards of the teaching of English and foreign languages in India. It is the only university in India catering exclusively to the teaching/learning of foreign languages.

EFLU offers academic programmes in English, Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Persian, Turkish,Italian, Chinese, Korean, and Hindi.

EFLU was among the first institutes in the country to start a cultural studies course with an M.A in that subject. EFLU offers M.Phil and Ph.D. in this area which blurs the disciplinary lines between Sociology, Film Studies, Anthropology, History, Literature etc. In 2006, a decision was passed by the parliament of India to accord it Central University status.

The university was renamed English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) on August 3, 2007 with Abhai Maurya of the Department of Slavic Studies, University of Delhi, as its first Vice-Chancellor.

The Hyderabad campus is the main and oldest campus of EFLU.

The institute is situated on a 15 hectare site near Osmania University in Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, and has its Administrative block, Academic block, Library, Men's hostel, Women's hostel, Health Centre and Staff quarters, all on the campus. 

The academic programmes of the institute have been organized into six schools:

School of Distance Education
School of English Language Education
School of Foreign Languages
School of Language Sciences
School of Critical Humanities
School of Communications

The campus offers courses leading to a B.A., M.A., Be.d in English, M.Phil. and Ph.D. in disciplines including Linguistics, ELT, Literature, Cultural Studies, Communication studies, European Studies and Language Studies.
