In 2004 Lok Sabha elections AIMIM received 132,807 votes (74.6%) in the Charminar area (one of seven assembly constituencies in the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency). 1984–2004 the MP of AIMIM was party president Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi, but ahead of the 2004 elections Owaisi stepped down in favour of his son Barrister Asaduddin Owaisi.

The party has roots back to the days of the princely State of Hyderabad. It was founded and shaped by Nawab Mahmood Nawaz Khan Qiledar Golconda ofHyderabad State by the advice of Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan the Nizam of Hyderabad and in the presence of Ulma-e-Mashaeqeen in 1927 as a pro-Nizamparty. then it was only Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) and the first meeting was held in the house of Nawab Mahmood Nawaz Khan his house name was "Touheed Manzil" on November 12, 1927. The MIM advocated the set up of a Muslim dominion rather than integration with India. In 1938 Bahadur Yar Jungwas elected President of the MIM which had a cultural and religious manifesto soon acquired political complexion and became aligned with the Muslim Leaguein British India. He soon rose to be the supreme and unquestioned leader of the MIM and imparted a new militancy to it.

On December 26, 1943, Nawab Bahadur Yar Jung delivered an important speech in the All India Muslim League conference Lahore. In the first half of his speech he laid stress on the struggle for Pakistan. In the second half he talked about the creation of Pakistan. At the end he said,

"Muslims! Decisions made under pressure do not last for long. To-day we are not in need of a tree that blooms like a flower or in need of fruit that tastes sweet to our mouths. Instead, we are in the need of fine manure that dissolves in the soil and strengthens the roots. That will unite with the water and soil to produce beautiful flowers. That will destroy itself but will leave its scent and taste in the flowers. We are at present not in need of beautiful scenery that looks good to the eyes, but what we need are foundation stones that will bury themselves in the soil to make the building standing on them strong."

The Razakars (volunteers), a Muslim paramilitary organization aimed at sabotaging Hindus in Deccan, was directly linked to the MIM. In total up to 150,000 Razakar soldiers were mobilized to fight against the Indian Union and for the independence of the Hyderabad State against Indian integration and to force its eventual merger into Pakistan instead. After the integration of the Hyderabad state with India, the MIM was banned in 1948 till 1957. The MIM president and Razakar leader Qasim Rizvi was jailed from 1948 to 1957, and then he was left on the condition to go toPakistan, where he was granted asylum.
AIMIM active role in politics
Late Sultan Salahuddin Owaisiemerged as a supremo of AIMIM
Barrister Asaduddin Owaisi - Present President of AIMIM
Akbaruddin Owaisi - Floor Leader ofAIMIM

When Qasim Rizvi was released from jail in 1957 he was given a period of 48 hours to migrate to Pakistan, but before he intended to leave he wanted to give the leadership of MIM to someone but the MIM had ceased to exist; its headquarters taken over by the Indian government and no one wanted to take the responsibility as people were scared to associate themselves with the party after the brutal police action (operation polo) and integration of Hyderabad with the Indian union, a meeting was held by Qasim Rizvi but no one was willing to take responsibility so Qasim Rizvi asked to call Abdul Wahid Owaisi, who was one of the founding members of MIM and a very successful lawer but had ideological differences with Rizvi in the middle of the night and told him (even though I had differences with you I saw truth in you and pointing to the people in the meeting said these people used to bow their heads in front of me but today no one wants to take this burden and that is why I have asked you to come here) Abdul Wahid Owaisi after performing two rakats of prayer accepted his offer and he gave the presidency of MIM in writing to Owaisi and left never to come back, Abdul Wahid Owaisi, who was a very learned lawyer then framed the new constitution of MIM as per Indian law and renamed it as all India majlis-e-ittehadul muslimeen. Abdul Wahid Owaisi had to face many hardships and was initially kept in solitary confinement in prison for 11 months without any charge and was later even invited to Delhi and offered central ministership post by Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, but he refused and continued in his mission, he got the headquarters of MIM after a legal battle of 12 years from the Indian government, during the last days of Abdul Wahed Owaisi 1974–75, his son Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi took complete command of AIMIM and thus referred to as Salar E Millat (The Commander of the Community) or simply Sala In 1960, during Salahuddin leadership AIMIM made its full-fledged entry in politics by capturing the Mallepally seat of Hyderabad Municipal Corporation by defeating M. M. Hashim of Indian National Congress. In 1962, Salahuddin began his innings in the AP legislature by capturing the Patharghatti seat. that time, he contested as an Independent candidate and defeated candidate Masooma Begum, by a huge margin. When elections were held after formation of the Charminar constituency in 1967, Salahuddin defeated the Jan Sangh candidate, C.L. Megh Raj. In 1972, he shifted to Yakutpura constituency. Later in the next election of 1978, he again contested from Charminar and won against Abdul Husain of Janata Party.

AIMIM was successful in safeguarding there constituencies even when the Telugu Desam stormed to power in 1983. In 1984 AIMIM sent its candidate Salahuddin to parliament and he represented Hyderabad till 2004, Since then Salahuddin's elder son Asaduddin Owaisi represents the Parliament seat of Hyderabad.

In 2007, elected and serving members of the party made death threats against Tasleema Nasreen, pledging that the fatwa against her and Salman Rushdie were to be abided by. They also crashed a While she was in Hyderabad releasing Telugu translations of her work, she was attacked by party members, 3 of whom were then charged and arrested

When Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi died on 29 September 2008, His eldest son Barrister Asaduddin Owaisi is elected as the president of AIMIM since then he is leading the party centrally.

Mohammad Majid Hussain of the AIMIM was unanimously elected as the Mayor of Greater Hyderabad on January 2, 2012.
Criticism

AIMIM had problems with insiders as well. A break-away group that initially caused much problems for AIMIM during the 1990s is the Majlis Bachao Tehreek led by Amanullah Khan M.L.A. of Chandrangutta constituency. But he was defeated in 1999 assembly elections by Akbaruddin Owaisi of AIMIM.[citation needed]
Withdrawal of support to UPA

On 12 November 2012, Barrister Asaduddin Owaisi, Supremo of AIMIM announced the decision of the party's executive and declared that his party would now go after the state government for its "communal" and "anti-people" policies. Addressing a news conference, Owaisi said his party was compelled to take the decision due to "the communal behaviour of Kiran Kumar Reddy's government in Andhra Pradesh". Giving a detailed account of communal riots in the state and Hyderabad since 2010, he alleged that the Congress government not only turned a blind eye to MIM's demands to withdraw cases against innocent Muslims and take action against the guilty but pandered to the Sangh Parivar. The MIM's decision came after the government allowed construction of a canopy over a temple abutting the historic Charminar in violation of court orders to maintain status quo. Owaisi criticized the chief minister for ignoring the high court order to maintain status quo.

Party MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi has been widely criticised for his hate speech targeting Hindus and their beliefs on 22 December 2012 in Nirmal. He was arrested later, booked under several cases and remanded in judicial custody before he was released on bail due to his medical condition.
