History of Kandeleru


Kandeleru Dam is an irrigation project built on Kandaleru river in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh. This project is part of Telugu Ganga project which supplies drinking water Chennai city from Srisailan reservoir located on Krishna River. Kandaleru reservoir is mainly fed by link canal from the Somasila reservoir.Telugu Ganga project also serves irrigation needs under its canals in Andhra Pradesh.

Kandaleru Dam is the world’s biggest earth dam with 68 TMC of water storage spread over 11 square kilometres. This huge reservoir is part of Telugu Ganga project meant for supplying Krishna river water to Chennai citizens in the south Indian state of Tamilnadu. It was constructed across the Kandaleru river. This river originates in Velugonda hills and it flows across Gudur.
