This bridge played a major role in the movement of goods and passengers between Madras(now Chennai) and Calcutta(now Kolkatta). As this bridge served its purpose for more than 100 years it had been decomissioned 1997.
Until 1960s the Chennai-Howrah railway line used to be a single track so the Government planned to double the track to relieve railway loads and increase the passenger. A bridge of about 3 km long need to be laid in order to double track on River Godavari at Rajahmundry. As there is also a demand from the public to construct a road link from Rajahmundry to Kovvur. So the Government agreed to sanction the construction of a road -cum- rail bridge. In 1964 the construction of the second bridge was sanctioned by the government. The bridge was completed by the mid 1970s.
This Bridge is the Asia's Second Longest Road cum Railway Bridge
Third Bridge to be constructed on River Godavari
Initially it was built as an anicut by Sir Arthur Cotton joining two mid stream islands constructed in four sections at Dowleshwaram which is at a distance of eight kilometers from Rajamundry where the river is divided into two streams; the Gautami to the left and the Vasistha to the right forms the border lines between the West Godavari and the East Godavari districts..Construction was completed in 1850.
Later on it was developed and a road way had been laid in 1986 making possible for people to ply between both the Godavari Districts.
